Kate Patterson: Pastry Sous Chef

Kate grew up in Dade City, Florida surrounded by her family’s orange grove and endless hospitality.  Some of Kate’s fondest memories are in her grandmother’s kitchen amid endless advice for preparing Alabamian delicacies.

She is a proud graduate of the University of Florida, where she attained a BFA in Theatre Performance.  Before play openings she would bake cakes and cookies for everyone.  Throughout college and after graduation she couldn’t stop feeding people.  Eventually she realized that her passion was not on the stage but on a plate.  Kate moved to New York City and became a line cook at Barolo, a Northern Italian restaurant.  She also worked at Pizza Bolla and I Trulli. She soon discovered that her aptitude and enthusiasm for making breads and sweet, pretty things far outweighed that for dicing onions.

This brought her to Paris, France where she earned the Diplôme de Patisserie at Le Cordon Bleu.  She has traveled through Europe tasting the marvels of different cultures.  Landing in Washington, DC, she staged at Citronelle and facilitated the opening of Something Sweet.   Kate is delighted to bring her joy for baking to RIS, and is thrilled to grow with this team.
