For DC Eater's Five Days of Meat, our pastry chef, Melania Castegnaro, made a small but important change to our existing pie recipes. Instead of using butter for the pie crust, she's using duck fat. The result: three different delicious seasonal fruit pies to choose from — blueberry, cherry and strawberry — each served with vanilla ice cream, are being offered this week for our "daily slice."  For the full meat experience, we're offering Chef Ris'

mom's recipe of a classic

Canadian-style meat pie.

Check them out all weekend long.

We are honored to receive the National Restaurant Association 2014 Restaurant Neighbor Award. The award was founded fifteen years ago by the National Restaurant Association and American Express to help honor restaurants in the field of outstanding community service and involvement.

Since opening in 2009, Chef Ris and team have supported many organizations in the community through mentoring, participating in fund raising events, walking, running, feeding people and serving on boards. Chef Ris leads by example and has taught all of her staff that giving back to the community in which you live is a responsibility we must all share. We are happy to be this year's DC recipient.

Tickets still available for June.

We've teamed up with our talented restaurant friends in the neighborhood to offer diners a unique experience... four courses with a beverage pairing in four different restuarants.  The opportunity is available just for 12 diners every Wednesday.  While we have sold out for April and May, June tickets have just been released and there are a few seats still available.  The June experience will start with hors d'oeuvres at West End Bistro, an appetizer at Blue Duck Tavern, an entrée at Marcel's and dessert at RIS.  Each dish will showcase the Chef's talent and the beverage director at each location has selected the perfect pairing to match.  At only $100 per person (excluding gratuity and tax), it's a wonderful value as well.

Grab your seat before it's too late!

Our neighbors at West End Cinema are showing a sneak preview screening of the movie "Chef" this Tuesday, May 6th at 7pm.  The film will be followed by a simulcast national Q & A with Jon Favreau.  Tickets can be purchased here, and as good neighbors they are offering a $3 discount when you enter the promo code RIS!

CHEF stars Jon Favreau (Swingers, Iron Man) as Chef Carl, who quits his job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant after refusing to compromise his creative integrity for its controlling owner (Dustin Hoffman), and is left to figure out what's next. Finding himself in Miami, he teams up with his ex-wife (Sofia Vergara), his friend (John Leguizamo) and his son to launch a food truck. Taking to the road, Chef Carl goes back to his roots to reignite his passion for cooking -- and zest for life and love. Starring Jon Favreau, Dustin Hoffman, John Leguizamo, Sofia Vergara, Oliver Platt, Bobby Cannavale, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson. CHEF was the opening night film at this year's SXSW Film Festival!

Stop by RIS before the show! Our pre-theater "Marquee Menu" is only $35 for 3-courses, or enjoy small plates at the bar - our Rush Hour specials are only $4-$6.30 and available from 4pm to 6:30pm.

If given the choice, Chef Ris always prefers to go directly to farmers markets or specialty markets to shop tangibly.  The purpose is not only to obtain the best quality ingredients that are locally sourced, but also to continue building upon decades of relationships she has developed with local farmers and vendors.   Acquiring our rotating selection of delicious cheeses is no different.  Twice a month, Chef Ris drives to Arrowine in Arlington, Virginia to select cheese with Arrowine cheesemonger, Perry Soulos.  As Chef Ris has seen how much Perry knows and loves his craft, it was no surprise to find out Perry has recently been named the nation's best cheesemonger after winning first place at the 2014 Cheesemonger Invitational held in San Francisco in January.  The testing rounds included lengthy multiple choice tests, a blind taste test, cutting, pairing with foods, wrapping, selling and sign making.  Perry competed against 50 of the best cheesemongers in the country. Congratulations, Perry, we're so happy for your win!  The cheese menu at Ris offers four selections, rotating daily.

The Elizabeth Dole Fellows dined at RIS Wednesday evening while in DC to raise awareness for Military Caregivers.  The Elizabeth Dole Foundation announced this week the formation of the National Coalition for Military Caregivers. The purpose of the Coalition is to gain support for America's hidden heros - the thousands of family members and friends who provide emotional and physical support each day to our nation's military and veterans.  To read more, visit the Elizabeth Dole Foundation website.

For the month of April, we were determined to escape the long winter and bring on the warm weather cuisine. The result brings menu selections you may find on sun baked terrains during spring break, such as ceviche and key lime pie.  And then there's the wild side representing our efforts to serve locally sourced and sustainable foods as best we can.  The "RIS Gone Wild" half of the menu showcases buffalo style sugar toads, a local blow fish found in the Chesapeake Bay, and Wild Rockfish, those gorgeous huge rocks that Winter/Spring here in the Chesapeake, Spring/Summer in the Hamptons and Summer/Fall in Nantucket where they are known by their alias, Striped Bass.
The three-course menu, listed below, includes two options for each course and is only $25.  Available Monday - Friday, 11:30am to 3pm.  The RIS "lunch club" offers RIS stamps for each lunch entrée you enjoy with us during a calendar month. The seventh lunch is on us and redeemable anytime!
